Chapter Twenty

Danique merely stared, tongue tied, heat rising to her face as she turned to look at Jenna. How the hell did she know it’s my birthday? Then she remembered her conversation with Debs earlier that day. A conversation that had started off discussing star signs. When Danique had casually mentioned she was an Aquarian, to her dismay, Debs had quickly realised it was her birthday month. Danique was not a big fan of birthdays, especially milestone ones, so fortunately for her this year, her birthday fell on a Sunday, which meant she didn’t have to be at work and have the constant reminders from co-workers that she’d been alive for three decades. For some reason, thinking of it in those terms made her feel ancient.

‘You want to hang out on my birthday?’

‘Yes,’ Jenna replied, gently rocking from heel to toe and back again. ‘I mean, if you want to.’

‘Like…’ Danique faltered momentarily, elation filling her. ‘A—’

Before she could finish her sentence Jenna quickly cut in, her lips curling into a nervous smile ‘Danique, it’s no biggy. We’re just hanging out, not flying to Las Vegas to get married.’

Danique dropped her gaze to the floor momentarily, to hide the disappointment she knew resided in her eyes. ‘Sure. Why not? Hanging out sounds good.’

Even as she said the words, Danique was uncertain about whether agreeing to Jenna’s suggestion was such a good idea. It was one thing going for a coffee together at work but meeting up socially was another altogether.

As if sensing her hesitation, Jenna said, ‘You don’t have to if you don’t want to, you know.’

‘No… sorry, of course I do,’ Danique replied quickly.

‘We could go see a movie, have a Chinese afterwards?’

Danique nodded. ‘Chinese food’s my favourite.’

‘Good, mine too. Now that’s settled, do you want a lift home?’

‘That’d be great, thanks.’

‘I hope we’re not going to get stuck in traffic. London in the rush hour is a nightmare,’ Jenna said to her as they walked side by side in the direction of the lift minutes later. A tense polite atmosphere resided in the air as they stepped into the lift.

‘Oh… I don’t want you to go out of your way,’ Danique said, internally hoping that Jenna would tell her that she didn’t mind. She would like nothing more than to spend the twenty minutes she anticipated it would take for the drive from the office to her flat, with Jenna.

‘Don’t worry, I don’t mind. I know you have to get the tube and there are way too many people on it at this time of day.’

Understatement of the year. Danique refrained from telling her that was the very reason why she took the bus.

Jenna pressed the button for the garage. The space in the lift was too small. Too intimate. If she so much as stepped forward, she would be pressed against Jenna. Not that it would be a bad thing.

‘So where were you thinking of going to eat?’ Danique said in an attempt to fill the growing silence.
